This week, host Colenn Berracasa replays the inaugural episode of the show and finally posts it online! She talks with Michael McCain, former professional skier and current project manager at a construction company here in Santa Barbara. They discuss leaving college at age 20 to ski professionally, college athletics scholarships, how to decide when to stop playing competitive team sports, the importance of friends in new endeavors, living in Colorado, Utah, and California, getting to ski all over the world, skiing 190 days a year and cross-training on trampolines, surfboards, and golf courses during the other days, hanging out with Olympians and the other most elite skiers in the world, being a non-famous professional athlete, working in ski shops to pay the rent, living the dream, deciding to leave the mountains, come to Santa Barbara, and get a “real job,” and why following your bliss is the most important part of life.

We talk about studying abroad in England, life right after college, deciding to search for jobs in marketing instead of public health after investigating the job market, the ins and outs of informational interviews, useful skills from college (hint: majors aren’t important), working in retail to pay the bills but making the most of it, a story about gluten-free cosmetics, how to navigate office politics, making networking less elusive, why working full time changes social habits, post-college social life, and why moving back in with the parents is responsible.

We talk about coming to college at UCSB from the East Coast, the process of becoming a yoga teacher, the Lulu Lemon phenomenon, the trendiness of yoga, the unintended competitiveness in yoga classes and how to avoid it, the difficulties of doing a physical job, getting by (financially) as a yoga teacher, what it means to become a “real person” / “grown up,” choosing work you love over work that’s just for money, leading a fulfilled life, the difficulties of being young with many interests and not knowing what’s coming next, and how to get into yoga if you’re new to it.

This week, host Colenn Berracasa interviews Arden Rosenblatt, a UCSB mechanical engineering alumnus and current Carnegie Mellon graduate student who just started a 3D printing business called Piecemaker. We talk about moving back home to New York after graduating from UCSB, working in green building, WOOFing in Alaska, starting graduate school because of truly wanting to develop necessary skills and information to progress personally and professionally, seeing the mechanical engineering major as a philosophy, the thought process behind becoming an entrepreneur, why starting a business in the age of the internet is different than it was in the pre-internet era, taking risks, making friends after graduating from college, why 2013 is a prime time to be young and ambitious, and enjoying life.
